Architects EAT has done its first podcast! If you have been loving the articles we've been writing on all things hospitality and architecture give this a listen. Eid talks about the importance of storytelling in hospitality design.
During this podcast we discuss:
-How Eid started out in the industry.
-How Eid got interested in design in the first place.
-What does the term 'good design’ means for him.
-The communication between a designer and client in the process.
-The importance of storytelling in a space.
-How pop-ups are treated as an experiment in design.
-How can venues re-use items from an old fitout when they open a new venue, rather than just starting from scratch.
-The blend of technology and great design in spaces.

Being able to bring landscape and light deep into a plan is always a challenge. This window seat frames the garden landscaping and joins the kitchen and living room to their very own private garden.

We have a very in depth story highlighted on our insta page on #EATAlfredStables. During the restoration process we sanded back layers of paint to reveal historical colour swatches (swipe!) These colours then informed the new material palette. The result is a mix of things obviously new but in complete harmony with the old. Photos by @shannonmcgrath7

From the #EATArchives
Moving House was a project finished around 2017 that was about balancing privacy and access to light. The aluminum screen appears to the street as a monolithic object but once inside, the secret views to the garden, the sky and the variation in ceiling shape and height creates highly dynamic moments of sun and shadow. You can almost track time as light dances across the floorplate. Maybe that is why we called it moving house? Something is always on the go.

Bellows House was actually finished a year before we got to photograph it. Due to lockdowns, and then travel restrictions we weren't able to get @derek_swalwell 📸 out to the building until a year after it's completion. What we got back has influenced every decision we now make about getting projects photographed. The garden had time to grow in significantly, the building had begun to patina and there was a certain lived in feel we strive for in all our projects that doesn't often get captured.

This is a serious topic. But that doesn't mean we have to be so serious. We are at the beginning of our green journey and no one has all the answers yet. It's an amazing time to be in Architecture. Last night, we had 3 of our 5 green team members present at the @architectsdeclare_au event on how we created our Sustainability Action Plan. Our presentation was about how a practice of 24 people can start upskilling to keep up with the industry. A big thank you to our green team: @char.not @cassiaward @izziewhite @valonia_octavia @alinadain. Massive thank you to @Steffenwelscharchitects for inviting us to talk and for organising the event.

From the first day on site - Albert knew we wanted to preserve these existing Oregon trusses and reuse them in the #EATstockroomcottage. Only one was failing, and our superhuman master builder @combconstruction managed to build a new truss with such accurate replication that we can no longer tell which is existing and which is the addition.

Did anyone head to @omniabistro over Easter? There was so much joy in Omnia's fit out with the use of richly coloured and textured finishes. It's particularly important to us in hospitality that the customer gets to touch and feel something worthwhile.

Happy Easter everyone!! Wish we were heading to a beach house like our beautiful Bellows for the long weekend.
.
We've talked a lot about the interiors of this house, and not as much about the exterior. The site sits adjacent to a public walkway to the beach, so the building was designed to really protect the inner sanctuary of the home. Although somewhat brutal in its expression, there are details and intricacies along the path that help delight the street edge. "What is in there?" "Is that a house?"

Sometimes we get obsessed with things. The scattering of repeating details in Bellows House is like following a breadcrumb trail of treats. It's an incredible achievement of all the craftsman involved. We are only ever one part in a intricately choreographed dance of technical specialists.

KIDS GONE WILD.
The #EATthreepartshouse is another one from our #eatarchives series. This project was a large scale alteration and addition to a 1950's clinker brick residence divided into three distinct zones. The brick house, the courtyard, and the lantern. And yes, that is a chalkboard sliding door #kidsrule

The post is about craftsmanship of a model, and to us it represents an understanding of the actual construction process and sequence, which bits to go in first and which bits support what on top so the model can stand up. For the client it's about understanding proportion and scale, and how the facades relate to each other in a 3 dimensional form. It's an abstract but relatable form of art, unlike 3d renderings which are quite often hyper realistic, and strip away any imaginative or intellectual input from the viewers.

STORY TIME: We’re doing a deep dive into the electric blue chairs you’ll see dotted around the recently opened #NewStudentPrecinct at @unimelb. But before we begin, you need to meet @alexanderlotersztain. Alex, Director at @derlot_official, is a long time friend of Albert’s.
.
Casually catching up for coffee one day back in c.2019, Albert mentions our work on the New Student Precinct. Quickly summising we would need chairs for the project, Alex waves his hands; say no more. The chairs needed to deliver on a lot of requirements:
1. They needed to be durable and easy to clean (hello all nighters and greasy take out).
2. They needed to be heavy, to avoid being carted off to live in share houses around Melbourne, but also to negate the Melbourne winds.
3. They needed to be used both indoor and outdoor.
.
In three weeks (THREE WEEKS!!) Alex walks into our office with a prototype in hand – and the Strap collection was born. We pitched to our design team and stakeholders on the use of the chairs, and for the cherry on top, we promised the electric blue would be a custom colour for @unimelb only, referencing the iconic uni blue. The colour will not be available to anyone else; and the identity of the uni campus remains foremost. The family of chairs allowed us to create different informal study arrangements, as well as hospitality settings.
.
These are the first photos we’ve seen of students in the new campus spaces, it is SO good seeing it used. Once again, big thank you to @livingedge for supplying the furniture, to @derlot_official for your superb craftsmanship. Our design team - @lyonsarchitecture @koningeizenberg @aspectstudios and @kaneconstructions

Designing a book is like designing a building: It starts with a vision and a narrative. Then, with your client and consultants, it develops. It needs structure, navigation, function and form, and of course the devil is in the details – Albert Mo
.
The 208 page Retail Tenancy Design and Fit-Out Guide is a product of immense collaboration between us, @unimelb, @donaldcantwattscorke and @huestudio. The aspiration and benchmark were set by @unimelb from the onset to be one that is about building for community, sustainability, inclusiveness, and diversity, while at the same time recognising the commercial aspect of the New Student Precinct.
.
We ourselves have used these kind of guides for projects in major shopping centers and developments over the years. We’ve learnt and experienced from a designer’s point of view the pros and cons, what is missing and what needs to be improved. We’ve also had the benefit of being part of the amazing architectural team of this Precinct together with @lyonsarchitecture, @koningeizenberg, @aspectstudios and NMBW, hence a deep understanding and appreciation of what the team is trying to achieve overall.
.
We wanted to produce something that is easily digestible, something that’s less about glossiness and commercial but more like a beautifully illustrated design book. Hence we’ve engaged our long-time collaborator, the graphic designer @huestudio, together our vision is a book that is graphically clean and neat, with bespoke illustrations, and carefully curated images that depict a contemporary version of a typical retail tenancy design guide, and of course how can we not include the iconic Melbourne Uni blue?!
.
For those of you who’re lucky enough to be using this guide for your fit-out projects in the Precinct, drop us a line we want to hear what you think! and we can’t wait to see the built result of your amazing retail and food & beverage outlets!

Following suit from last week, #EATBellowshouse takes out SILVER in the international category for 2021 Brick in Architecture awards. Perfectly robust for seaside living with salt air and coastal winds, the versatility of the material allowed us to create a continuous palette that ran uninterrupted between the interior and exterior. We love how this material weathers over time, and we’re excited to see the natural patina process ground this building in its microclimate. Thank you @brickworksbp @glengery @brickindustry !
